We are proud to support the Lead-Free Campaign which is being championed by WaterSafe. This campaign calls for plumbers across the UK to stop using lead solder. Although the use of lead-based solder in drinking water systems has been illegal for more than 35 years, a recent survey found that some installers are still use it.
By committing to using lead-free solder exclusively, we’re protecting the health of our customers and taking a stand for safer, cleaner water systems in Edinburgh.
Why is lead-free solder important?
Lead solder poses serious health risks. Over time, lead can dissolve into drinking water, and even small amounts can build up in the body, leading to long term health issues. Babies and young children are particularly vulnerable, as exposure to lead can affect their development.
Despite these risks, the survey by WaterSafe revealed:
- Some plumbers still carry lead solder in their tool bags.
- Only half of those surveyed have lead-free solder with them at all times.
- There’s a risk of lead solder being used accidentally, especially when plumbers lack the right materials.
The message is clear: always using lead-free solder is the only safe option.
