Types of hot water tanks for your home

Choosing the right hot water cylinder depends on your home’s water pressure, available space, and heating system.  At Celsius Plumbers, we install and repair both unvented pressurised cylinders and gravity fed (vented) cylinders.  But what does all this water tank terminology mean?

Unvented pressurised hot water tanks

These connect directly to the mains water supply, ensuring high pressure and a strong flow rate throughout your home.

Unvented hot water tanks are most commonly found in newer build homes from 2000 onwards.  They don’t require a separate cold water storage tank, making them ideal for modern properties where space is limited.

Well insulated and highly efficient, unvented cylinders offer excellent heat retention, reducing energy consumption.  If you like strong powerful showers, then this tank is for you.

Gravity open vent hot water tanks

These traditional systems rely on a cold water tank (usually stored in the loft or hall cupboard) to supply water under gravity pressure.  They’re often more affordable to install and work well in homes where mains pressure is weak.

If water pressure is a concern, adding a shower pump can enhance performance.

Top Tip – if you currently have this type of set up and don’t use much hot water, changing over to a smaller mains pressured water heater and removing both your cold water and hot water tanks could be the right solution for you.

Do I have a hot water tank or cylinder?

It’s a good question and something customers ask us all the time. In short, it means the same thing.

Comparing hot water tanks (cylinders) - which one is right for you?

Feature Unvented Pressurised Cylinder Gravity Open Vent Cylinder
Water Pressure ✅ High, suitable for powerful showers ❌ Lower, may need a shower pump
Cold Water Tank Required ❌ No ✅ Yes, in the loft
Efficiency ✅ More efficient, stores water under pressure ❌ Less efficient due to gravity feed
Space Requirement ✅ Compact, no extra tank needed ❌ Requires loft space or extra cupboard space for the cold water tank
Installation Cost ❌ Higher due to regulations and components ✅ More affordable installation
Best For ✅ Homes with strong mains water pressure ✅ Homes with weaker mains pressure

I have hot water flow from my new tank which is great as it was very bad before. The new shower is great and I am extremely happy with the finished product. My new tank also appears to be saving me money in electricity. The engineers were all very pleasant when they came out too.

Gain more storage space? Before and After examples

Before Old set up in Edinburgh flat with hot and cold water tanks in cupboard.

Look familiar? Jam packed cupboard!

Look how much space this old plumbing tank set up takes up in this small Edinburgh city centre flat.  The entire cupboard is filled – and it had poor water pressure!

After New set up with hot water tank replaced and lots of space.

More space & better efficiency

Look at the options the homeowner now has to put up some shelving and turn this into a usable airing cupboard.  Who doesn’t like extra storage, right?

Typical traditional setup in Edinburgh

If you have this same hot and cold water tank set up in your Edinburgh property, get in touch, as there is a better more efficient way to heat your water.  Again, poor low flow water pressure is common with this set up.

After If you don't need lots of hot water consider an Ariston water heater.

Space saving hot water setup

A great way to create extra space and that’s exactly what our customer in Portobello Edinburgh wanted.  No need for lots of hot water, but they really wanted the extra cupboard space.  High mains water pressure on hot and cold water is also a huge benefit from this system.

No bath? Why not consider an Ariston mains water heater?

An Ariston mains water heater is a compact, space saving alternative to traditional hot water tanks, perfect for homes that don’t use a lot of hot water, like my grannie!  Instead of heating up an entire tank every day, it only heats what you need, meaning less money spent on your electricity bills.  This makes it perfect for elderly homeowners, those with electric showers, or anyone who doesn’t require large amounts of stored hot water.  It provides instant hot water for sinks but isn’t suitable for homes with baths, as it lacks the capacity for high demand usage.

The water tank (in the attic of a block of flats) was overflowing so I called the trader who came to fix the problem within three hours.

DEAN | LANDLORD, CRAIGLOCKHART

How much does it cost to install a hot water tank?

The cost depends on the type of tank and installation complexity.  Unvented hot water cylinders are generally more expensive due to additional safety measures, while gravity-fed systems tend to be more affordable.

Are a hot water tank and a hot water cylinder the same thing?

Yes!  These terms are often used interchangeably and refer to the same type of storage unit that holds heated water for your home.

How often should I service my unvented hot water tank?

To ensure safe and efficient operation, we recommend servicing your unvented cylinder once a year.  Gravity tanks do not need serviced.

Do unvented hot water cylinders increase energy bills?

While they may use more energy initially, modern unvented cylinders are well-insulated, helping retain heat efficiently and potentially lowering energy bills over time.

Can I switch from a gravity-fed system to an unvented system?

Yes! However, your home’s mains water pressure must be checked to ensure it meets the required standards for an unvented system.  Installation must also comply with building regulations.

Do gravity-fed hot water tanks need servicing?

Unlike unvented systems, gravity-fed hot water tanks do not require annual servicing.  However, it’s a good idea to check for leaks, limescale buildup, and other potential issues periodically.
