During the tour, we will visit the 17th Century water pipes in Edinburgh Old Town. These wooden pipes carried water from Comiston Springs, to the towns public well heads.

Wellheads like this one at the Netherbow, built in 1675 on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, were among the first public sources of free spring water in the city.

“What did Edinburgh used to smell like? This tour was seriously fascinating! Michael from Celsius Plumbing gave our group the ultimate tour of Edinburgh’s watery past, from sewage-filled lochs to cast iron pipes on the Royal Mile. Who knew plumbing history could be this fun?”

History of Plumbing in Edinburgh

Chief Executive testimonial

“The History of Plumbing in Edinburgh tour was a fascinating and informative experience, with Michael from Celsius Plumbing and Heating sharing his deep knowledge and evident passion for the centuries-long effort to bring water to the City of Edinburgh.

I found the history of how water was brought to the Royal Mile particularly interesting, especially seeing the wellheads that still scatter this world-famous road, as well as viewing the original wooden piping at the Museum of Edinburgh that was once used to move water through the city’s historic streets.

I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in Edinburgh’s remarkable history and engineering.”
